brit pop: keane

Poll Request Selection for week 20.02 - 26.02: KEANE

Tom Chaplin (vocals), Richard Hughes (drums), and Tim Rice-Oxley (piano) are childhood friends from Battle, East Sussex, England who make up the merry pop sounds of Keane.

Formed in 1997 while each were attending college, Keane initially started out as a cover band. They played Oasis, U2 and Beatles songs in and around Sussex with guitarist Dominic Scott. The schtick would only last so long, for Keane got tired of playing everyone else's songs and yearned to do things on their own. When Chaplin left his Art History studies at Edinburgh University behind in 1999 and moved to London to join the rest of his mates, Keane had a chance to really do it.

They began writing and recording almost immediately. Call Me What You Like marked their self-released debut single in early 2000 and Wolf At The Door followed a year later, however things were slow to develop. Scott left the band in July 2001 and labels weren't really biting at Keane's rich, piano-driven kind of rock & roll because Coldplay was supposedly doing it. In December 2002, Keane got the break that they'd be waiting for. Fierce Panda's Simon Williams was summoned by a friend to attend a Keane gig in London. He was so impressed by the band's performance, Williams offered to issue the band's next single, Everything's Changing, on the spot. The limited-edition release was such a success on radio, several labels soon swarmed around the indie rock trio, eager to offer them a recording contract. Keane signed to Island UK in fall 2003 and released their fourth single, This Is The Last Time. The band's full-length debut, Hopes and Fears, appeared the following spring.

jazz - piano: dave brubeck

Dave Brubeck was born in 1920 in Concord California, a small town near San Francisco. He was the youngest of 3 sons, all of them musical. Brubeck began to improvise tunes at age 4 (his mother, a pianist, jotted them down). The family moved to a ranch when he was 11, and in that period of relative isolation he listened to jazz records and continued learning his way around the piano. Even though Dave's father wanted him to be a rancher, or a veterinarian, Dave chose music and studied it in College, and then embarked on a career as jazz pianist and composer in the early 1940's.

Dave Brubeck Octer - Dave Brubeck Collection, Holt-Atherton Special Collections, University of the Pacific Library. Copyright Dave Brubeck.Starting in the late 40's and early 50's, Dave Brubeck began to make his mark: the innovative Octet, then his Trio, then his classic Quartet made a huge impact on music in that period. Brubeck was on the cover of Time Magazine in 1954, and had the first million-selling jazz record in 1959 with the celebrated tune "Take Five" from the album Time Out. There was another stellar quartet in the 70's, and a series of compositions that combind classical music and jazz.

Lately Brubeck is active in the "Brubeck Institute," a program for young jazz players, and tours widely. His 1968 piece "The Gates of Justice" has been released on CD, and his latest solo piano recording features World War II songs: it is called Private Brubeck Remembers.

rhythm & blues: sade

Sade was born Helen Folesade Adu in Nigeria, the daughter of a Nigerian teacher and an English nurse. Her parents separated when she was four, and she moved with her mother to London's North End. In her teens, she worked a succession of part-time jobs from waitress to bike messenger, yet devoted all of her free time to music, inspired by the likes of Billie Holiday, Nina Simone, Marvin Gaye and Al Green. Subsequently, Sade studied fashion design at St. Martin's College in London, and even saw some of her work shown in New York in conjunction with Spandau Ballet's first U.S. appearance. But her musical passions quickly overtook her budding fashion career, and soon Sade was performing as one of three vocalists in a promising jazz-funk collective known as Pride.

Early in 1984, Sade reemerged as lead singer and principal songwriter of the group bearing her name, accompanied by her former Pride cohorts Stuart Matthewman (sax and guitar), Andrew Hale (keyboards) and Paul Spencer Denman (bass). Their instrumental and compo- sitional talents brought additional form and color to Sade's words and melodies, providing a solid base for her natural vocal charisma. The team would continue to play and write together for the next decade.

well.. here's my version of how i came to know about sade..

simply put.. i grew up listening to smooth operator and the sweetest taboo.. one of my uncles used to say i look like sade *gasp/lol* - must be the way i used to tie my hair up..

years down the road, it happened one day.. a long distance phone call from goob.. telling me to "hey.. go grab sade's cd and listen to track no. 8" and so i did.. and there's no turning back from then on..

now, sade is like our mutual favourite female vocalist..

alternative pop: bjork

Björk Guðmundsdóttir IPA: /'pjœr?k 'kv?ðm?nsto?ht?r/, (born November 21, 1965 in Reykjavík, Iceland) is an Icelandic singer/songwriter and composer, (formerly the lead singer with The Sugarcubes) with a great expressive range and an interest in many kinds of music including popular, trip-hop, alternative rock, jazz, ambient music, electronica, folk, and classical music.

Björk means "a birch tree" in Icelandic (the meaning of Icelandic names is often transparent), cognate with Old English beorc and the modern English word. Though many English-speakers pronounce her name "Byork", a more accurate approximation would be "Byerk", which she has pointed out rhymes with "jerk". [1] Guðmundsdóttir is pronounced roughly "GWUTH-muns-doe-tir", and means "Guðmundur's daughter".

Björk's father, Guðmundur Gunnarsson, is a well known labour leader in Iceland and was nationally recognized before his daughter became famous.

reggae: bob marley

Bob Marley, Singer/Songwriter

  • Born: 6 February 1945
  • Birthplace: St. Ann's Parish, Jamaica
  • Died: 11 May 1981 (cancer)
  • Best Known As: The reggae hero who did "Get Up, Stand Up"

Bob Marley was the world's first reggae superstar. He was part of the Jamaican group The Wailers, along with reggae greats Bunny Livingston and Peter Tosh. In the late 1960s and early '70s Marley, a Rastafarian, gained early attention for writing hits recorded by others, including "Stir It Up" (recorded by Johnny Nash) and "I Shot The Sheriff" (a hit for Eric Clapton). But then he came into his own international fame with songs that spoke of politics, religion and life on the streets, including his anthemic "Get Up, Stand Up." A greatest hits compilation titled Legend was released in 1984; it sold millions and earned a reputation as the one reggae album owned by people who own just one reggae album.

Marley's wife, Rita, and his son, Ziggy, have recording careers of their own.

90s: debbie gibson

Debbie Gibson became a pop phenomenon in the late '80s, scoring a string of hit singles when she was only 17. Although she was still a teenager, Gibson showed signs of being a talented pop craftsman, capable of making catchy dance-pop in the style of Madonna, as well as lush, orchestrated ballads. Gibson's time at the top of the charts was brief, but it was quite successful, producing five Top Ten singles, including two number ones, and two multi-platinum albums.

brit pop: the stone roses

hmm..

now, where or how did i came across to this band.. to think about it now.. i really can't recall how i came across this band but i know for sure that i was hmm.. 14.

after a tragic death of my life as a teenybopper, somehow i seeked refuge in better music.. and since then.. there was no turning back..

the stone roses.. well, i may not know much about the band but i sure dig their music.

finally.. after nearly a decade of listening to their music, i finally get hold of their music videos.. well.. that just proved that i didn't grow up with mtv.

to all the guys *and gals* i've grown up with at that time..

bossa nova: antonio carlos jobim

February 10 2006:

antonio carlos jobim aka tom jobim

the guy who made ipanema famous.

my first experience with jobim was from his Wave album.

lotsa nice loungey tunes.. good for driving around tho i don't drive - yet. but i can imagine.. driving with the windows down.. wind blowing my hair.. smooth traffic, nice, soothing tunes to accompany me back home.. or maybe a drive to nowhere.. it's gotta be a drive to catch the sunset.. aaaahhhh.. really nice.

my personal ultimate favourite has got to be Insensitive. a track that's been sung by frank sinatra and sting.. sting's version is really nice and how i love the song..

check out this video of acj with frank..

tell me watcha think!

take pleasure and satisfaction...

february 20 2006:

here is a video i just get hold of.. a track by acj - insensatez, performed by
Jaques Morelenbaum, Paula Morelenbaum and Ryuichi Sakamoto

jazz: ella fitzgerald

ella.

the jazz ella. not the malaysian rock ella. *giggles*

this ella is my ultimate favourite in female jazz vocals. i was won over by her vocals in antonio carlos jobim's Wave album where she sang So Danco Samba.. a very upbeat and catchy song.

i love the way she sang Lush Life, Summertime and of cos So Danco Samba.

lucky me *and all ella's fans*, i've found these two videos..

so.. once again i shall say.. take pleasure and satisfaction from these videos..

bossa nova: astrud gilberto

another type of music that was introduced by my goob..

i have always wanted to listen to all types of music.. especially jazz and bossa and well.. guess i'm just blessed to have found my kismet who not only share the same kinda love and life but this gift of music he has given me is just so amazing..

started listening to astrud in around 1995 i think..

well, my dearest goob gave me a verve jazz masters boxset as a gift.. it included cds from stan getz, antonio carlos jobim and astrud gilberto.

my ultimate personal favourite from astrud is Once Upon a Summertime.. it is just such a sad song.. pretty slow but it just got stuck in me.. call me a mush but well.. who cares! *lol*

astrud's baby girl - bebel gilberto is pretty good herself. she made the song So Nice popular to all loungers..

well.. for astrud, this is the only video i have found so far. the song that made her famous - the girl from ipanema

so.. go ahead.. *receive pleasure and satisfaction* from the video!

jazz: chet baker

i was introduced to chet baker by my then boyfriend and now my dearest husband - goob.

one of the first few albums and my personal favourite albums still is right now has got to be The Best of Chet Baker Sings and Songs for Lovers.

my favourite tracks gotta be:

  • imagination
  • stella by starlight
  • come rain or come shine
  • my funny valentine
  • that old feeling
  • there's a lull in my life
  • embraceable you
  • lush life
i came across this excellent video of chet's performance.. and it's just amazing!

it'll take a while to load as the video lasts for at least 40 mins..
